But this is one of the first times that Malfoy is a bit startled by what he’s getting into. Verbally taunting someone is one thing, but he doesn’t actually expect Umbridge to hit him, and really mean it. In fact, I think this is one of the crazy things about that character. No one really takes her seriously, and when she shows her really dark side, people are surprised and not really sure if they can believe what happened.
